Venice Magazine - December 1998 List | 1 | 2
Barely 20 years old and with eight feature films to her name, Katherine Heigl, (pronounced Hi-goal), has been gracing movie screens since she was eleven years old, and unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past few years, you’re sure to recognize her recent work. At the age of 12, Katie made her feature debut in That Night (1992), starring Juliette Lewis and C. Thomas Howell; then came a co-starring role in Steven Soderbergh’s Depression-era drama, King of the Hill (1993). At fifteen, she played the lead role of Nicole, opposite international film star Gérard Dépardieu, in My Father, The Hero (1994), followed by a pivotal role as Steven Seagal’s niece in the action thriller Under Siege 2 (1995). This fall she co-starred in Universal Pictures’ camp horror flick, The Bride of Chucky.

Now in a completely different role, Katie stars opposite Peter Fonda in this month’s highly touted NBC original telefilm, The Tempest, an inventive retelling of William Shakespeare’s magical tale of love, betrayal, and freedom, set in an eerie, shrouded swamp in a Mississippi bayou during the Civil War. Katie plays the role of 16-year-old Miranda, who finds herself trapped between her loyalty to her father, "Prosper" (Fonda), and her love for a young Union soldier. The Tempest also stars five-time Emmy nominee John Glover, who plays Prosper’s thoroughly evil younger brother. Katie gives a strong, touching performance in this often-magical telefilm that airs December 13. She clearly has just laid down more tracks for her already fast-paced train ride – headed straight for success. On a sunny Thanksgiving morning, only two days after her twentieth birthday, Katie shared some of her holiday with us, to talk about life, liberty, and her acting career.
