Katherine Heigl plays a spaced-out co-ed in
the new sci-fi high-school drama Roswell |
|
When your new WB dramedy nabs the plum post-Dawson’s Creek time
slot, you’ve got to feel the pressure. But Katherine Heigl, star
of the highly anticipated X-Files-meets-PO5 sci-fi series
Roswell, is taking it all in stride. With some high-profile
flicks on her resume (My Father The Hero, King Of The Hill,
Bride Of Chucky), Katherine plays Isabel, a teen with a secret:
Yep, she’s an alien. (As if being in high school didn’t provide
her with enough problems.) In real life, Katherine’s a
surprisingly down-to-earth (pun intended, thank you) 20-year-old
with a passion for acting and star-gazing. Resting up in
preparation for Roswell’s hectic shooting schedule, Katherine
took some time to sit down with TC and dish about high school
horror stories, James Van Der Beek’s evil twin and rats for
dinner.
What kind of input do you have on Roswell? Can you say stuff
like, you know "I want my character to eat more rats?"
[Cringes] Well, I don’t know if that would be my rodent of
choice, but hopefully as the show progresses, we’ll get to
convey our thoughts and feelings on who we think our characters
are. It’s all very exciting. [Whispers] Rats?!
Tell us about Isabel, your character on Roswell.
Isabel is the only female alien in the group. She’s basically
spent her whole life with these two guys, so she doesn’t really
have a lot of friends or people to confide in. She plays it very
tough and very cold. Nothing bothers her, nothing gets to her -
but obviously, it does after a while. I love her because she’s
really complicated. You could say she has a lot going on.
Well, being an alien, and all.
Exactly.
What was the audition process like for Roswell?
It was just brutal. I’ve never done TV before - with movies, you
audition for the directors and producers, maybe go back one more
time and you’ve got it. For Roswell, I must’ve auditioned six or
seven times for as many different people before I could even go
to the network. When I found out I got the part, everyone
rejoiced, then we shot the pilot - and then it was months of
waiting again to find out if it was going to get picked up.
And hopefully they’ll keep your character in the show.
Well, they darn well better.
Do you have special powers - your character, I mean?
We all do. We can manipulate the molecular structure of things.
We can just snap our fingers and make things --
So you’re no Sabrina.
No, but we’ve definitely got little tricks up our sleeves. We
can connect to people on a level where we can see into their
minds - we can’t actually read minds, but we can experience what
they’re feelings. It’s all very X-Files. |
