Katherine's decision not to
submit her name for consideration for this years Emmy Awards
resulted in considerable surprise and comment from the press -
particularly as she had won the Best Supporting Actress Award
the previous year. When asked why she had opted out Katherine
stated with honesty and integrity that her storyline had not
provided the right material to warrant a nomination and that
"she did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from
an actress who was given such materials".
Grey's Anatomy co-star
Chandra Wilson voiced her support for Katherine's decision at
the press conference for her forthcoming Hallmark movie
"Accidental Friendship". Describing the press reaction as "out
of proportion", Wilson explained that the public do not
necessarily understand that the submission is based on a single
episode rather than a body of work or a seasonal arc, and in a
drama category an actor has to have a story that presents either
high comedy or high drama in order to have a shot at winning.
She added that simply "if you ask every single actor on
every single show they'll tell you the same thing. Some years
you submit, some years you don't".
