Thanks to
Katherine's generosity 25 Chihuahuas rescued from shelters in
the Los Angeles area are scheduled to arrive in New Hampshire on
Wednesday ready for adoption
reports WMUR:
"Officials with the
Humane Society of Greater Nashua
(HSGN) said
the dogs are being shipped from Los Angeles because the area
has an overpopulation problem from people buying the dogs as
status symbols, rather than pets."
"The shipment is a collaborative project with the
Salem
Animal Rescue League, which will take five of the
Chihuahuas. The Nashua Humane Society will take the rest."

The
rescue was part of Project Flying Chihuahua organized by Laurel
Kinder from
Kinder4Rescue. Kinder told
The Nashua Telegraph, that Los Angeles shelters are
overflowing with Chihuahuas because too many "backyard breeders"
are trying to capitalize on the breed’s new popularity spurred
by stars like Paris Hilton and movies like "Beverley Hills
Chihuahua."
Chihuahuas are the second-most euthanized breed in L.A. behind
pit-bulls, Kinder said, because the shelters there simply don’t
have enough space to keep up with the stray and unwanted animals
the city produces.
HSGN
executive director Karen Bill and Kinder Rescue had been trying
for several months to move the surplus Chihuahuas from Hollywood
to the northeast. Faced with either an unbearably long drive or
an expensive flight, solutions were scarce. After contacting the
Jason Debus Heigl
Foundation the problem was solved, with the organization
offering to cover the cost of transporting the pups from the
West Coast. "It was amazing," Bill told
PEOPLEPets.com. "The ideal situation come true."
