spoke to Fred Topel at

currently filming for an August 2007 theatrical release:
Grey's Anatomy Star
Katherine Heigl on the Set of Judd Apatow's Summer 2007 Comedy
Knocked Up
The lovely Katherine
Heigl takes a break from playing a pregnant one night stand to
talk about her new comedy. Knocked Up is currently filming for a
summer 2007 release.
A few blocks south of the
set of her new movie, Knocked Up, Katherine Heigl took a break
from playing pregnant for a cigarette break. Must be nice to
take off the belly and light up. At base camp, near all the
production trailers, Heigl sported a cute pink sweatsuit while
she politely held her cig away from her visitors.
"This was my costume that I had a nine-months belly on that they
just took off me, so it's all stretched out right now, she said.
Today was a good tummy day and Heigl smelled like a dream. Those
prosthetic bellies are notorious for their unique odor.
"That only happens if the guys making them don't have enough
time the night before where you have to dry it out properly and
then you get it on you and it just smells rotten and it's awful
and everybody around you's like, 'Oh, Katie's on set with her
belly' and it's disgusting."
Known for her dramatic work on TV’s Grey’s Anatomy, and Roswell
before that, Heigl welcomed the chance to laugh all day on a
movie set. She plays a woman who hooks up with a guy and then
tries to have a relationship with them when they find they are
about to become parents. This comes from Judd Apatow,
writer/director of The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
"What I like about Judd and his style is that he's taking things
stuff that everybody can relate to and relationship issues and
hormone issues and kind of exaggerating it enough to be funny,
but it's still honest and realistic and takes a very sort of
hard look at what it's like to be in a situation like this and
make it work and try to be responsible and try to do the right
thing and try to be a grown-up because you're about to have a
baby, but still being a child in a lot of ways. So I feel like
it's going to be real funny. It's kind of right up my alley as
far as the humor goes, but it's also very sort of poignant and
honest."
Being on set with guys like Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd, there is
always the danger of cracking up before Apatow calls "Cut."
"Because of my fear of being fired, I would get it back for the
scene. But yeah, especially in the beginning it was really hard
for me and I'd feel so terrible and I'd keep apologizing because
I knew I was ruining the takes, but the stuff that Seth will say
is just so bizarre and hilarious and you can't help it and you
start laughing. But I've gotten really good by now. We're about
two months in. I've gotten really good at, I'll start to laugh
and I can rein it in in about two-and-a-half seconds and I feel
like that's good. I've gotten it down to like two seconds versus
laughing for a minute and a half."
Shooting in Brentwood, California, Heigl didn’t have to leave
home for the summer to make Knocked Up. "I've always loved
shooting on location. I love new places and I love to travel,
but this was a big year for me. I had so much going on and I
just moved and I have lot of family in town, so it was actually
really great to be here and not have to worry about doing all
the stuff long distance that needs to get done. It's very
difficult when you're working these kind of hours to have a life
as well and to get the things done in your life that need to get
done, just as far as going to CostCo and getting your toilet
paper. It just gets complicated, so it's made my life easier to
be around home, for sure. I miss traveling. I'd like to go on
location next year, maybe." |
