Founded by Nancy and Katherine Heigl, the
Jason Debus Heigl Foundation is involved with a number of
programs including
Heigl Hounds Of Hope
and
Pup My Ride.
The Pup My
Ride program has rescued over 1400 dogs in the past year and
recently the manager of the program
Robin Harmon was honored by
the LA County Supervisors for her work. The recognition caps
a unique program started last year that takes shelter dogs from
places where there’s an overabundance of some breeds to other
cities where those dogs are in demand and supply is short. That
frees up shelter space and helps in its own small way to reduce
euthanasia rates in the shelters.
The success of the
Pup My Ride
program has also been in part to funding from Katherine and
Nancy's foundation which is helping to expand the number of
cities providing homes for rescued animals.
Almost Home Canine Rescue in Madison, South Dakota, has also
benefitted from the support of the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation
which is sponsoring new arrivals from puppy mills. 6 out of 7 of
the dogs rescued by the organization are pregnant and need
extensive medical care and high quality food.
In Mojave, California, a harrowing case of
animal cruelty where over 200 dogs and 25 cats have suffered in
terrible living conditions has lead to a criminal conviction for
the perpetrators. The result of the legal victory has meant that
a large number of animals need to be urgently rescued and homed.
The rescue community lead by
Last Chance For
Animals has stepped forward and organisations such as
Heigl Hounds Of Hope have taken dogs as part of their rescue
programs.
However, there are still almost 80 dogs and
several cats in the Mojave compound and help is badly needed and
the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation has
offered to donate to rescue groups $200 for each dog rescued.
