Isabel is concerned when Max uses his powers in front of their mother: he puts out a grease fire in the Evans’ kitchen and tries to cover for it by throwing water on the remains. She becomes even more worried when Sheriff Valenti comes to investigate the fire, and Mrs. Evans explains to him what happened. Isabel asks Max if Valenti was acting suspicious, but Max isn’t sure. She realizes that he is still upset about breaking up with Liz, and reassures him that he did the right thing.

Back at school, Liz and Maria run into Max and Michael, and they agree that it’s okay for all of them to still attend the school’s basketball game, since they have seats together. Meanwhile, Mrs. Evans is watching a video of Isabel and Max as children, and then questions Isabel about her brother’s tendency to be so private. Isabel attempts to avoid the question by saying that’s just the way Max is, and then escapes to the basketball game. When she gets there with her friends, all she has to ask is, "Any room for us?" and Alex makes nearly an entire row of people move just to accommodate Isabel and friends. When Isabel spots Max, she takes him off to the side and tells him that their mother was watching videos of them as children, seemingly looking for something.

Mrs. Evans confronts Max with an informational pamphlet Valenti has given her on fire safety, saying that a grease fire is only made worse by putting water on it. Later, Max and Isabel argue when Isabel wants to tell their mother the truth, but Max disagrees. Upset, she tells him that it’s not just his decision to make.

In her room, Isabel is changing her lip color with a wave of her hand when Mrs. Evans enters, wanting to know what Isabel remembers about being adopted. Isabel says that the day Mr. and Mrs. Evans came for them was the day their lives began.

When Valenti tells Mrs. Evans that Max was at the Crashdown the day Liz was seemingly shot, she attempts to get the truth from Max, showing him the home video of him as a little boy, healing an injured bird. Max steadfastly refuses to admit anything. Later, Isabel, Max and Michael meet to discuss the situation, and Michael angrily states that they should destroy the video, so that it’s Mrs. Evans’ word against theirs. Isabel is furious, but Max still insists their mother is not to be told anything. Isabel storms off, saying that Max is not the final word on everything.

Guilt-ridden, Max gives his mother a toy house she had given him when he was a child, but he still won’t tell her the truth. When he meets Isabel again, he tells her everything is going to be okay, and she takes that as meaning he told their mother the truth. When he admits he didn’t, Isabel is heartbroken.
