Isabel Evans is a beautiful, popular teenage girl who is normal in every way, except for the fact that she can heat up a burrito with her hand and listen to a CD by putting it up to her ear. Isabel’s an alien in Roswell, New Mexico, where she, her brother Max, and their friend Michael, attend high school and live with their adopted families, who have no idea that their children are from another planet. But one day, one of Isabel’s classmates, Liz Parker, is shot while waiting tables in her parents’ UFO-themed diner, the Crashdown Café. Max impulsively jumps in to heal her wound by using his alien powers of molecular manipulation, and so risks everything in order to save the life of the girl he’s always loved from afar. Isabel is horrified by what Max has done, especially when the local sheriff, Jim Valenti, investigates the shooting. Though Liz lies to protect Max, Valenti is suspicious, so the three aliens plan to run away. When Liz comes up with a plan to throw Valenti off the trail, Max decides to stay, and Isabel will not leave without him. Even though she doesn’t trust humans, she agrees to go along with Liz’s plan. At Roswell’s Crashdown Festival, Isabel and Maria fake an accident in which Maria is hit by a car, and make it seem as though an alien was the one to commit the crime. But Valenti discovers the deception, and is now more suspicious than ever.
