In the morning following the Crashdown Festival, both the human and alien teenagers are afraid that the aliens’ secret will be discovered. Isabel, who wants only to continue living as a normal teenager dating lots of human boys, is still upset that Max revealed their secret to Liz. She’s civil to Liz, but she also takes every opportunity to pull Max away whenever she feels he and Liz are getting too close.

Liz, who now wants only to protect Max and the other aliens, is suspicious of the new substitute teacher, Ms. Topolsky. Liz takes it upon herself to tell Michael of her suspicions about the new teacher, especially after Ms. Topolsky – who admits she’s not a substitute teacher after all, but the new guidance counselor – accidentally drops a file with Michael’s picture in it. Though Isabel is against the idea, Michael breaks into Sheriff Valenti’s office to see if the sheriff has anything incriminating against the aliens, but finds that the files are gone. Instead, he discovers a key in Valenti’s thermos; when he holds it in his hand, he’s inundated with psychic flashes. He steals the key, and with Max’s help, they manage to escape without getting caught.
