Using the blackboard first seen in Viva Las Vegas, Maria once again recaps the last two seasons, then claims it’s a disastrous time for Roswell, because it’s "P R O M" – the ultimate four-letter word, as she calls it.

Liz appears to be spending time lately with Sean, but later confesses to Maria that she has no date for the prom. Max tells Michael that he has been remembering images from their former life, but Michael only seems to be interested in what the "chicks" were like on the other planet.

In the library, Isabel overhears a boy shyly asking a girl to go to the prom with him, and smiles sweetly yet wistfully, as she watches the girl happily accept. Meanwhile, Michael upsets Maria by telling her he doesn’t "do proms" or believe in them, and labels them as unnatural. They get into yet another argument, and end up claiming they’re going to see other people. Liz and Max meet and agree to go to the prom together, but only as friends.

Back in the library, Isabel sits at a table with Alex, telling him that she thinks Billy Saroyan’s going to ask her to the prom. Alex continues taking notes from his reading while paying little attention to Isabel, but comments that he heard Billy was taking Amy Green. Isabel responds that the point is, she would have said no. Alex steals curious glances at her as she continues, "What about you, Alex? Anyone special?" Alex vaguely replies, "Not right now." "Really?" Isabel hints, "Maybe someone special from your past, who’s ready now, when before, she wasn’t?" Alex stops writing and looks at her seriously. He says that it would be his dream to take her to the prom – at which point Isabel smiles – but then Isabel would be on to the next thing, leaving Alex once again "obsessed, pathetic, and lovesick," just as he was before he went to Sweden. So he tells her his answer is no, he won’t take her to the prom. Isabel is visibly upset.

As Kyle nervously asks Tess to be his date for the prom, Maria and Liz break into Michael’s apartment and deduce that he has been seeing someone else. Finding an address, they go spy on Michael and "Juanita, Homewrecker," as Maria calls her. Meanwhile, after Tess helps Max remember more about his past on the home planet, Liz sees them hugging and storms off, only to run into Sean, who she says is "ubiquitous." She snarls at Sean that her life is falling apart, for which Sean’s answer is to take her bowling. Liz rolls a gutterball and announces, "I suck." But Sean confesses that he feels so much when he looks at her, and thinks she’s suffocating in her non-relationship with Max. Liz gets up, and this time rolls a strike.
