Part 4
In 1996, Katherine took the lead role in "Wish Upon a Star". The film follows the lives of two sisters who unknowingly make a wish to trade places whilst gazing on a falling star. Of course, the wish becomes true and the events that follow descend into chaos.

"Wish Upon A Star" was directed by Blair Treu an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and also starred a number of Mormon actors. Katherine herself had a strict Mormon upbringing and was not allowed to date until she was 16. An exception was made for Blossom actor Joey Lawrence (then 18) whom she met at Seventeen magazines 50th Birthday celebration in 1994. However, the romance was not to be, and lasted a mere 3 months. "I was on the East Coast. He was in L.A. It was mostly over the phone," she told People Magazine in 1999.

However, 1996 proved to be a difficult year for Katherine and her family. Katherine's parents divorced and her mother was diagnosed with cancer. She also had to make the difficult decision between pursuing her acting career and furthering her studies. The decision was not an easy one, as it had always been her ambition to attend college, but her desire to establish herself as a successful actress was too strong, "I was a good student, but I had found my niche as an actress and I was already looking to the future."

Following her graduation from New Canaan High School in 1997, she moved with her mother into a 4-bedroom house in Malibu Canyon, Los Angeles. This enabled Katherine to focus upon acting with the guidance and support of her mother, who now managed her career.

In 1997, Katherine portrayed Taffy Entwhistle, Rita Hayworth's stand-in, in the movie "Stand-Ins," stealing the show as one reviewer wrote, "with her subtle internalized characterization consisting of scheming determination and lost vulnerability". She was also cast as the beauteous Princess Ilene in "Prince Valiant," a European production also starring Stephen Moyer and Edward Fox. The film which had a sizeable budget unfortunately failed to secure a theatrical release.

Katherine then branched into the world of television films, co-starring with Peter Fonda in a re-working of the classic Shakespearian play "The Tempest" (1998), updated with an American Civil War theme. This NBC film saw her take on the important role of Miranda Prosper, a young woman torn between the love for her father and that of a Union soldier.
