Petco Foundation Hope Gala
At the Petco Foundation Hope Gala on Saturday evening, Katherine Heigl and her mother Nancy were honored with the Hope Award for their tireless efforts to eliminate the needless suffering inflicted on animals by human cruelty, indifference and ignorance. The award recognized their work through the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, which they co-founded in 2008.
In addition to receiving the award, the mother and daughter duo were also presented with a grant for $100,000 to help the JDHF continue its lifesaving programs and initiatives.
"We are humbled and honored to be the recipients of this year's Hope Award," said Katherine Heigl. "The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation was established out of love - for animals and for my brother, Jason, who loved all creatures. I am so proud to join the Petco Foundation in celebrating the common goal that we all have to make a difference in animals' lives."
As part of the award presentation, a video highlighting the work and achievements of the Heigl Foundation, narrated by Katherine Heigl and accompanied to music by her husband Josh Kelley, was shown to the audience.
The Hope Gala which included both silent and live auctions, raised over $700,000 on the day, with all proceeds supporting the Petco Foundation's lifesaving work in communities across the country. The Heigl's donated several two-night stays at their ranch in Utah to the auction, which sold for $31,000 each to the successful bidders.
CBS News 8's (San Diego) Dan Cohen proudly served as MC and event chair. Here is his video report from the gala.
Registered emotional support dog Speedy was introduced to Nancy and Katherine as they posed for photographers and chatted to attendees ahead of proceedings. He certainly seemed to make an impression!
