40th AFI Life Achievement Award Honoring Shirley Maclaine
Katherine attended the American Film Institute's 40th Life Achievement Award ceremony held at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, CA. yesterday evening (June 7), to honor Shirley Maclaine's contribution to the entertainment industry. A huge admirer of Maclaine's, Katherine was one of a host of stars to take to the stage at the event, speaking about her respect for an actress who helped to pave the way for women in the business, "You taught me this exceptional lesson: to hold my freakin' own,"
Wearing a Monique Lhuillier gown with a daring thigh-high split and Camilla Skovgaard strappy sandals, Katherine accessorized her look with Le Vian earrings and a Judith Leiber clutch, as she took to the red carpet to pose for photographs and chat to the press ahead of the show.
Access Hollywood asked about her newly adopted daughter Adalaide and wanted to find out how toddler Naleigh is enjoying having a baby sister in the family. Katherine also revealed her favorite Shirley Maclaine movie and admiration for the 78 year-old Oscar winner.
Us Weekly were also eager to talk children. "She's great! She's a delicious, beautiful, wonderful child", Katherine said of baby Adalaide, adding "It's hard to describe Naleigh. She's more charming, more gregarious, more outgoing, never stops talking - so she's got all this personality, and now I've got this tiny little being who can't really see even yet. They're both just so enthralling. It's just been so unbelievable."
Although Katherine and husband Josh Kelley were not first time parents, she told People that adopting their second daughter had opened her eyes to an entirely new experience in parenthood: life with a newborn. Naleigh was adopted from Korea when she was 9 months old, but with Adalaide adoption took place shortly after her birth. "I had never had a newborn before. I didn't really have that experience. So it's all been new," Katherine explained. "I was prepared for the nights and having to get up and all of that. But the beauty of it is it's really only a few months of your life that you're walking around like a zombie because you haven't slept!"
"Naleigh was super excited about having a new baby sister - until she arrived. Then she was a little hesitant about whether or not she wanted her to stay," Katherine shared. "And then she became her little protector and is taking on the role of big sister very seriously."
"I think it's far more chaotic than I anticipated," she added laughing, when asked how life was as a new family of four. "And I think every parent probably says that and every parent tries to warn new parents about it. And we all go, 'Pish posh, it's going to be fine. What's one more?'". With Father's Day rapidly approaching, Katherine also confessed "I kind of forgot about Father's Day, I'm going to have to think of something clever!"
Other A-List attendees at the special AFI ceremony, which will premiere on TV Land on Sunday June 24 at 9.00pm ET/PT, included Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Jennifer Aniston, Steven Spielberg, Morgan Freeman, Sidney Poitier, Warren Beatty and Sally Field. Ahead of her speech to the assembled A-listers, Katherine admitted to Entertainment Tonight that she was "very nervous. I hate speaking in front of live audiences, so I'm just hoping I don't puke. If I don't do that it's gonna be the best night ever."
Chatting to Extra on the red carpet, Katherine was asked to quote her favorite lines from a Shirley Maclaine film, something she had no difficulty in doing, joking that it was "kind of scary" how big a fan she was of the screen legend.
Speaking to Starcam, Katherine laughed as she revealed that her dog Weezer was named after Maclaine's character Ouiser Boudreaux in Steel Magnolia's and also told of her delight at working alongside Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams in her forthcoming movie The Big Wedding which hits the big screen in October.
